Malberg: Basalt history and views
After the basalt summit of Malberg was quarried away at the beginning of this century, a small lake formed in the crater. Information boards along the basalt educational trail at Malberg explain the basalt quarrying. The mountain is a tobogganing destination in winter; in spring, summer and autumn, it offers hikers panoramic views of the Wied Valley and the heights of the Westerwald. The time of year therefore helps determine whether tobogganing or hiking is the focus of a day at Malberg.
Circular routes with different stops
The H2 Hausen circular trail climbs to Malberg and Malberg Lake, passes the Westerwaldklinik and St. Josefshaus, and returns to Wiedtalbad. Check the current trail conditions locally before planning this route. Halfway along the way, the Kleine Wäller MalbergSeeBlick offers a shorter loop that returns to the parking area via a forest road. A detour leads to a viewing plateau at Malberg Lake, with a reclining swing and a view of the steep basalt walls. The two trails offer different highlights: H2 connects several named stops, while the Kleine Wäller offers a shorter loop option and the viewpoint at the lake.
Water and fishing
Wiedtalbad Hausen has an indoor leisure pool with a slide, a current channel and a waterfall. Another water-related attraction is the Hausen fishing area on the Wied, which stretches from Kreuzkapelle to Schießplatzweg. Seasonal rules apply to fishing; check current permits and restrictions in advance.
Traces of past uses and communities
Below Malberghütte, a former attendant’s hut was converted into a small museum about the former ski operations in 2022 as part of a LEADER community project. Kreuzkapelle is also nearby. It was built in 1694 by the then parish priest of Waldbreitbach and is the founding place of the brotherhood community established by Brother Jakobus Wirth, the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross Hausen/Wied. The history of the former ski operations at Malberg and the religious history of the surrounding area therefore stand alongside one another as distinct cultural themes.
