The Willy Brandt Forum is located on Willy-Brandt-Platz in the heart of Unkel’s old town. It commemorates the life and work of German Chancellor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Willy Brandt (1913–1992). The permanent exhibition presents key stages of his political career while also focusing on his lesser-known life as a citizen of Unkel. The forum is open to everyone, and admission is free; it is worth checking the latest visitor information before your trip.
Literature is also part of the town’s cultural life: since 2023, the town of Unkel and the Unkel Development Agency, together with partners, have organised the reading festival UNKEL LIEST. You can also encounter literary history at the Freiligrath House. It is located at the end of Pützgasse, right on the Rhine Promenade; the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810–1876) lived there in 1839 and 1840. Another historical trace leads to the prison tower, built around 1550 as part of the town fortifications. St. Pantaleon’s interior is distinguished by Gothic and Baroque furnishings and a chapel dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
The town hall’s history includes its air-raid shelter: the building, constructed in 1855, was fitted with the shelter in 1936 by official order. Since 2005, the cellar has once again been equipped with original items that were required at the time, including fire beaters, gas masks and air-raid helmets. Its furnishings offer a glimpse into life in the cellar during wartime.
Hiking trails and views of the Rhine
The Unkel Stelenweg was created in 2022 and 2023. You can explore it on a short 6.5-kilometre route or a long 8-kilometre route; the difference between the two is 1.5 kilometres. Another option is the “Around Unkel – Vineyards and Views” circular hiking trail: it is about 4 kilometres long and follows woodland and hiking paths, making it shorter than either of the two Stelenweg routes.
From the viewing platform on Stuxhöhe, you can see across Unkel, the Rhine and the Rhine Valley. A Rheinsteig portal was inaugurated on Stuxberg on 22 October 2025. It serves as a photo spot featuring the Rheinsteig logo. If you are interested in the ascent to the Rheinsteig, its starting point is at the waterfall in the Hähnerbachtal.
