Rodenbach offers two distinctly different circular routes and a history with deep roots. The NR6 leads into the Buchbachtal valley and later runs alongside the Limes; Tour Tip 2 is a challenging cycling loop that follows the Limes Cycle Route. The Rodenbach forestry district also contains woodland communities of woodruff beech forest, and local May and Whitsun customs are still maintained. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to specific interests: walking, cycling, nature and history.

Hiking in the Buchbachtal Valley and Along the Limes

The NR6 – Märkerwald Trail is a 10.7-kilometre circular hike of moderate difficulty. It descends into the Buchbachtal valley to a barbecue hut near Rodenbach. After the section in the Buchbachtal valley near Rodenbach, the route joins the Limes Hiking Trail and heads northwest along the historic Roman border fortification known as the Limes. The Buchbachtal valley and the Limes are therefore specific points of interest on the hike, alongside its length and stated level of difficulty.

Woodland and History in Rodenbach

The Rodenbach forestry district contains extensive areas of woodruff beech forest. This woodland formation broadens the picture of Rodenbach beyond the routes described and offers a specific connection with nature alongside the history of the Roman border.

The history of the village also reaches far back: the name Rodenbach appears in a deed of donation dated June 24, 773. The former settlement of Auf dem Roth in the Buchbachtal valley is documented as early as 1209. Another tradition is upheld by the 1835 Burschenverein, or young men's association, which maintains Rhenish May and Whitsun customs. Early written records and traditions still observed today thus sit side by side.

A Challenging Cycling Loop

Tour Tip 2 is a 44.1-kilometre circular route for cycling, rated challenging. From the sports field in Rodenbach, the route joins the Limes Cycle Route and follows it to the Wied River in Segendorf. After leaving the cycle route at Feldkirchen, it climbs uphill on the K112 towards Rodenbach. These named locations make the route easy to follow: it starts at the sports field, follows the Limes Cycle Route, then switches to the K112 at Feldkirchen.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Neuwied

In the wider destination of Neuwied, the Roentgen Museum has a collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks that is unique worldwide. Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David Roentgen (1743–1807), the most important furniture makers of the 18th century, supplied European royal courts from Paris to St. Petersburg with their then ultra-modern luxury furniture, known as “Neuwied furniture.” This perspective on craftsmanship adds a cultural history explicitly rooted in Neuwied to the local connections with Rodenbach.

Choose Your Holiday Apartment Based on Your Day’s Plans

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rodenbach, the two route profiles can help guide your decision: the NR6 combines 10.7 kilometres with moderate difficulty, while Tour Tip 2 is a 44.1-kilometre challenging cycling route. Consider whether you want your stay to focus more on hiking in the Buchbachtal valley and along the Limes, or on a longer cycling loop. This way, you can choose accommodation to match your preferred activities rather than grouping the different routes together under a general list of activities.
