Culture

Důl Michal is an authentic industrial complex with preserved electric winding machines and compressors from the early phase of electrification. The Moravská Ostrava urban conservation area presents architecture and urban planning from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Dolní Vítkovice offers guided tours covering the history of coal mining and the operation of blast furnaces.

Gong is housed in a former gas holder that once stored purified blast-furnace gas. International conferences and congresses, concerts and art exhibitions take place there in the Ostrava-Město District. Ostravské kulturní stezky creates maps in cooperation with experts in history, architecture, culture and nature.

The Ostrava Museum presents art history, the history of Ostrava and mining, ethnography, archaeology, palaeontology, geology, mineralogy, as well as the nature and landscape of the Ostrava region. It interprets the history of the city from its foundation in 1267 to 1989. The mining exhibition includes a collection of mine lamps and measuring instruments, as well as an interactive map from 1928 showing the city's mine shafts. The exhibition on living nature and the landscape covers alluvial forests in the Odra catchment area, regional forests, rivers, ponds, meadows and the urban landscape.

Experiences

In the Ostrava-Město District, Velký svět techniky offers four permanent interactive exhibitions: Dětský svět, Svět vědy a objevů, Svět civilizace and Svět přírody. Malý svět techniky U6 presents an interactive history of technological progress, from the steam engine to modern engines. It includes original large blowers and around one hundred playful exhibits.

The Velký svět techniky building is fully accessible, while the Malý svět techniky U6 building is partially accessible. Visitors should allow approximately four to five hours for a visit to Velký svět techniky.

Nature

Landek is located near the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice rivers. It features an educational trail focusing on science and mining, with exposed coal seams from the Carboniferous period. Landek combines a national nature monument with rich vegetation and fauna and a technical monument belonging to the Mining Museum. Landek Park is served at the Hornické muzeum stop by DPO bus routes 34, 52, 56, 67 and 68. A cycle route follows the Ostravice and Odra rivers along cycle path G to Landek.

Polanská niva can be visited as part of special guided excursions with a nature ranger. The Polanská niva National Nature Reserve covers 50 hectares of forest. It forms part of the Oderská niva biocentre, the Poodří European site and the Poodří bird sanctuary. The Rezavka nature reserve is characterised by wetlands and alluvial vegetation.

Halda Ema has a thermally active interior with temperatures of up to 1500 °C and forms porcelainite and jasper minerals. Approximately one-tenth of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area lies within the city of Ostrava; the protected landscape area also extends into the Nový Jičín and Frýdek-Místek districts.

Getting around

Ostrava's public transport is integrated into ODIS and uses trams, buses and trolleybuses. The Poruba circular route is marked with local blue-and-white tourist signs and can be reached at Hlavní třída by tram routes 7, 8 and 17.

Cuisine

The visitor information highlights Czech, regional and international cuisine, as well as pub specialities such as utopenci and pickled Hermelín cheese. In the Ostrava-Město District, a 3.3-kilometre visitor route leads to craft breweries in Ostrava and the surrounding region. The visitor route Ostravské hospody focuses on 19th-century pubs and the history of beer brewing in Ostrava.
