Canyons and hiking trails: discover different landscapes

In Cambará do Sul, the destinations described are Cânion Fortaleza and Cânion Itaimbezinho. The main attractions of Parque Nacional da Serra Geral include the Mirante do Fortaleza, Pedra do Segredo and Borda dos Cânions trails. At Cânion Fortaleza, Trilha do Mirante leads to a view of the canyon; in clear weather, part of the coast of Rio Grande do Sul can also be seen from there. On Trilha da Cachoeira do Tigre Preto, the water of Arroio Segredo plunges downward. One striking feature of the canyon is Pedra do Segredo: the five-meter-high, 30-ton boulder balances on a base just 50 centimeters wide.

The trails at Cânion Itaimbezinho can also be distinguished by their descriptions. The upper Trilha do Vértice and Trilha do Cotovelo trails extend for 5 to 9 km through araucaria forest and highland grassland to viewpoints and picnic areas. From Trilha do Vértice, you can see the Andorinhas and Véu de Noiva waterfalls. Trilha do Rio do Boi is listed as 8 to 10 km long. It leads through Atlantic rainforest and riparian forest, along the canyon slope and rocks on the riverbank; the route includes a river crossing. The distance ranges overlap in part, but the trail descriptions emphasize different landscapes. Cânion Itaimbezinho is in Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra on RS 429, 18 km from the center of Cambará do Sul. The main entrance gate to Parque Nacional da Serra Geral is 22 km from Cambará do Sul and can be reached via a well-maintained unpaved road. Road conditions may change; check them before setting out. Coast, basalt and natural areas

In Torres, the contrast between basalt towers and the sea shapes the landscape of Parque José Lutzenberger, also known as Parque da Guarita. Ponte Pênsil offers a different point of reference in town: it opened in 1985, is made of wood and steel cables, and is intended exclusively for pedestrians. Further inland, Cânion Monte Negro, with Pico do Monte Negro, is home to the highest point in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, at 1,403 meters.

Protected areas also add different nature-focused themes to trip planning. Estação Ecológica do Taim in the state of Rio Grande do Sul is among the areas in South America with particularly large numbers of waterbirds. In Parque Estadual de Itapuã, Praia das Pombas and Praia da Pedreira are open to visitors; attendance is limited to 350 people per beach per day. Check the current restrictions before your visit. In Imbé, CECLIMAR offers an ecological educational trail, a mini-zoo, a museum and aquariums; visitor facilities may change, so it is worth checking before making plans. Fossilized trees are on display at Jardim Paleobotânico in Mata.

Culture and history at specific locations

In central Rio Grande do Sul, the Quarta Colônia UNESCO Global Geopark lies at the transition between the Pampa and the Atlantic rainforest. It covers 2,923 km² and includes nine municipalities. The landscape also has a paleontological dimension: the geopark contains evidence of the evolution of dinosaurs. This makes it a cultural and scenic focus distinct from the canyon trails in the south of the state.

Architectural history and traditions also vary from place to place. The town center of Santa Tereza was designated a protected site by IPHAN in 2012. It was built by immigrants from various regions of Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries; the protected area is reminiscent of communities in Veneto. In Dom Feliciano, visitors can experience Polish customs and traditions. Parque Histórico Nacional das Missões, established in 2009 by Decree No. 6.844, contains archaeological sites in several municipalities: São Miguel Arcanjo in São Miguel das Missões, São Lourenço Mártir in São Luiz Gonzaga, São Nicolau in São Nicolau and São João Batista in Entre-Ijuís. In parts of Rio Grande do Sul where Portuguese settlement predominates, singers and instrumentalists travel from house to house during the Christmas season in cities, towns and on ranches, announcing the birth of the Christ Child.
