São Jorge brings together a history told through its church, patron saint and place names, with named attractions and a cultural theme shaped by Italian heritage. The town’s history, the Mirante viewpoint and the Noite Italiana appeal to different interests rather than focusing on a single type of visit. When planning a trip together, you can weigh these options according to your fellow travelers’ interests. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in São Jorge, this offers a concrete starting point: should your stay focus mainly on local history, views or cultural events?

Church history and the town’s name

The early history includes two dates that mark different events. On August 13, 1939, the first church in the community, then known as Ponte de Guabiju, was blessed along with an image of its patron saint, São Jorge. The Paróquia São Jorge was established on January 6, 1947. These are two distinct milestones: the blessing of the first church and the later establishment of the parish. Pedro Nunes da Silva donated half a Colônia of land for the construction of the first church. The first parish was also built on land he donated. São Jorge was the community’s patron saint and gave the town its name; later, the municipality of São Jorge also took the patron saint’s name. The history of the name thus connects its religious roots with the names of both the town and the municipality.

Attractions with different points of interest

Among São Jorge’s main tourist attractions is the Igreja Matriz São Jorge, which connects thematically with the parish’s history. The Pórtico de São Jorge is also one of the main attractions. The Mirante Família Vigollo is another, offering a different point of interest as a viewpoint. The Capela São Marcos is also counted among the municipality of São Jorge’s main tourist attractions. This adds a religious point of interest at the municipal level, while the Igreja Matriz is named as an attraction in São Jorge itself. Check current visiting arrangements for the listed attractions before your visit.

Culture and travel planning

The Noite Italiana also adds a cultural dimension. The 33rd edition took place in São Jorge on July 26, 2025. The 34th Noite Italiana was scheduled for July 25, 2026, from 7:30 p.m. at the Salão Paroquial de São Jorge. Described as a traditional event, it was set to celebrate the culture, cuisine and customs of Italian immigrants with typical Italian food, wine, live music and socializing.
