Reddish sandstone formations, geological features, and cultural institutions give Caçapava do Sul a distinctive character. If you are planning a vacation here, you can choose between experiencing the landscape and exploring the area’s history and culture. Some places are particularly shaped by their geology, while the library, archive, museum, and church offer other ways to discover the city.

Discover the geology and landscape

One geological highlight is Chácara do Forte, an approximately 12-hectare geosite classified as a “complex area,” on the northwestern edge of Caçapava do Sul’s urban area. There is a waterfall on the property, accessible via a safe path. This makes Chácara a place where geological features meet a specific outdoor destination. From there, trails can connect with other routes toward Cerro/Mina do Andrade and Serra do Segredo.

The Pedras das Guaritas offer a different striking landscape: erosion has shaped reddish sandstone into steep, ruiniform formations, surrounded by Pampa grasslands. The formations and their surroundings create a landscape that is distinctly different from a city-only sightseeing trip. Visitors particularly interested in geology and open landscapes will find a dedicated point of interest here.

The diversity of rocks is also the focus at Jardim da Geodiversidade Professor Maurício Ribeiro. Large blocks represent the area’s main rock types. The open-air exhibition is complemented by a life-size paleo-art reconstruction of a ground sloth from the genus Megatherium. The rock blocks bring different types to life; the reconstruction adds a very different feature and provides a striking focal point for exploring together.

There is an important requirement for Cerro da Angélica: if you want to climb it or fly there, you must contact the owner in advance. Do not plan this activity without making prior contact.

The city’s culture and history

Centro Municipal de Cultura Arnaldo Luiz Cassol brings several institutions together under one roof: Biblioteca Pública Domingos José de Almeida, with more than 8,840 volumes; Arquivo Histórico Nicolau Silveira Abrão; and Museu Lanceiros do Sul. The library, historical archive, and museum offer different ways to engage with knowledge and history. If you would like to include culture in your trip alongside the landscape and geology, this cultural center offers several points of interest in one place.

The history of Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Assunção spans a long period: construction began on August 15, 1815, and was completed in 1935. Caçapava do Sul is also part of the Caminho Farroupilha route. These two historical connections complement the nature and geology themes with a glimpse into architectural and regional history.

For tourist information, Femapro has a Centro de Atendimento ao Turista; it is also the regional headquarters of Rota da Lã. As well as landscapes and cultural institutions, visitor information and the region’s connection to wool are among the topics associated with Caçapava do Sul.

You can also discover Minas do Camaquã, a closely connected destination.
