Igrejinha: Oktoberfest, Cultural Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Igrejinha
Igrejinha brings German cultural heritage together with experiences in forests, along the river, and at waterfalls. The Oktoberfest tradition and historic buildings tell the story of the region’s cultural history, while trails, viewpoints, and the riverfront promenade reveal another side of the town. This makes it easy to plan a trip around your own interests, with more emphasis on nature and outdoor activities or on architecture, tradition, and regional cuisine.
Cultural History and Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest de Igrejinha began in 1988 to honor and revive the cultural values of the German immigrants who settled the region. It is held annually as an Oktoberfest tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year’s event.
Igreja Gabriel is also part of Igrejinha’s cultural heritage. The Lutheran community built the church in 1900; it is considered the first church built throughout the entire Vale do Paranhana. Visitors can admire its exterior architecture. The interior, with its restored stained-glass windows, is open during visiting hours—check the current hours before your visit.
Casa de Pedra, called “Stone House” in English, is a historic landmark and a testament to German immigration. Since 2010, it has been recognized as state historical heritage. The building initially served as the foreman’s office and as a storeroom for the first German settlers to arrive in the region. Igreja Gabriel and Casa de Pedra convey different aspects of the cultural heritage: the history of an early church in one case, and the former use of a building in settlers’ daily lives in the other.
Forests, Views, and Water
The Caminhos do Rural Saudável route passes through Atlantic Forest and Araucaria forests. Its landscape includes rivers, waterfalls, and wooded slopes. Hiking trails, viewpoints, picnic areas, and camping facilities add to the opportunities for walking. Seasonal fruit picking and educational visits about medicinal plants and unconventional foods are also available. The experience ranges from trails through the landscape to insights into plants and rural food traditions.
Morro Alto da Pedra offers a different nature experience. It lies 700 meters above sea level and is used as a launch site for hang gliding and paragliding. From there, 360-degree views extend across the Vale do Paranhana and Serra Gaúcha. Morro Alto can be reached by an unpaved road in a 4×4 vehicle or via trails for hikers.
Orla do Rio Paranhana offers a distinct riverside setting: the 2.6-kilometer-long promenade features a bike path and wooden decks. Those who enjoy experiencing a landscape from alongside a waterway will find a different scene here than on the route’s wooded slopes or at the Morro Alto da Pedra viewpoint.
At Cascata dos Italianos, the water drops about 20 meters into a round natural pool. You can walk behind the falling water. Access is via a staircase with around 200 steps; there are no facilities on site. Check conditions before your visit.
Regional Cuisine and Cultural Venues
Produtos do Interior Ritter is a food venue and shop for traditional products that preserves Igrejinha’s rural way of life. Experiences there include Café Colonial and Noite Colonial. Bread, Cucas, Roscas, and other treats are also made with an artisanal touch. It offers a culinary complement to the nature trails and historic sights when planning your trip.
Parque de Eventos Almiro Grings has pavilions, stages, dining areas, and spaces for cultural performances. Together with the Oktoberfest tradition, it showcases Igrejinha’s cultural side and offers a different attraction from the historic buildings or rural nature experiences.
Planning Your Stay in Igrejinha
When looking for a vacation rental in Igrejinha, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay. Would you mainly like to explore forest landscapes, viewpoints, and trails, or are cultural heritage, the Oktoberfest tradition, and regional cuisine your priority? If seasonal fruit picking or the Oktoberfest tradition is important to your trip, take the relevant dates into account when planning. You can also check access conditions in advance before visiting Cascata dos Italianos.
