Floriano Peixoto: Indigenous History and Immigration Culture
Accommodation in Floriano Peixoto
Floriano Peixoto tells a story of several cultural layers: Indigenous presence dates back long before colonization, and German, Polish and Italian immigrants later shaped the municipality. Added to this are festivals with their own traditions and rural food experiences. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between long-standing historical connections and events tied to specific dates: this lets you decide whether history, music and dance, or regional cuisine should shape your stay.
Indigenous History in São João Usina
Three old Indigenous dwellings are located in the community of São João Usina in the municipality of Floriano Peixoto. Despite changes over time, they have been preserved in their natural state. There is also clear evidence of Indigenous presence in the present-day municipality long before and during colonization. The dwellings give this broad historical context a concrete connection to São João Usina.
Floriano Peixoto was colonized mainly by German, Polish and Italian immigrants. This history adds another cultural layer to the story of the earlier Indigenous presence. Travelers interested in the development of the area may find it helpful to consider the two topics separately: both belong to the municipality’s history, but they describe different periods.
German and Polish Festival Traditions
The 15th Festa Alemã and the 11th Festa Polonesa in Floriano Peixoto celebrated the contributions of the German and Polish communities to the area’s social and economic development in 2024. The Integrazione performing arts group appeared at the festivals. Its members included children, young people and adults, and its repertoire featured waltzes, polkas, a German march and the Polish national dance.
This selection brings music and dance together with the festivals’ cultural roots. Waltzes and polkas featured alongside a German march and the Polish national dance. If you are interested in these traditions, reports on the festivals show both the events’ historical connections and the different ways these were expressed on stage.
Rural Food Experiences
The pilot project “Encantos do Interior” included guided visits to farms and agro-industrial businesses. The route brought together cultural, historical, religious and gastronomic themes. When the initiative was presented in 2022, no date had yet been set for opening the program to the public.
One of the examples at the time was the rural property Sabores da Roça. Visitors could make pierogi themselves and produce their own garapa at an old sugarcane mill preserved on the property. Both activities connect local foods with an insight into how they are made.
Agroindústria GG was also part of the pilot project. The business, run by Gerson and Joel Giaretta, welcomed visitors, provided information about the agro-industry and the production of molasses, brown sugar and other sugarcane products, and offered a tasting. If you would like to plan one of these visits, check in advance whether visits are currently available.
Italian Culture and Local Cuisine
The 17th Festa Italiana and the 8th Encontro do Vinho in Floriano Peixoto celebrated Italian culture, traditional cuisine and local wine production in 2026. The program at the municipal gymnasium was expected to bring together hundreds of residents and visitors. At the reception, traditional appetizers such as torresmo, morcela, cheese, salami and pickles were served from 6:30 p.m.; these were accompanied by cachaças and liqueurs from Cachaçaria Santo Izidoro.
This edition brings together a cultural festival program and local products. If you would like to include an event in your trip, plan around the specific dates of that edition.
