Discover Bitburg: History, Museums and Brewing Culture

Bitburg brings together traces of Roman and medieval fortifications, museums, an archaeological trail and brewing history. The city also hosts cultural events and offers insights into its history. History in Walls, Squares and Churches

Parts of the Roman and medieval fortifications have been preserved at the Roman Wall. The multimedia Archaeological Trail leads through Bitburg city centre. Information boards and steles provide background information; augmented reality is also used to visualise architectural elements in a 360° display. This lets you encounter historical topics through both explanatory texts and digital views.

The fabric of the Church of Our Lady also preserves traces of earlier church buildings: a Romanesque church was followed by a single-nave Gothic hall church. At Pferdemarkt, the fountain is a focal point on a walk through Bitburg. It was inaugurated at the Old Town Festival in late May 1992. Its bronze sculpture by artist Roger Delleré depicts the horse trade.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Bitburg-Prüm District Museum presents the history of the Bitburg-Prüm district and the town of Bitburg through eleven main themes. These include agriculture, domestic life and work, traditional crafts and architecture in the Eifel. The exhibits therefore range from everyday life and work to the region’s architectural history. Special exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events are regularly held in the auditorium.

Haus Beda combines a painting and sculpture museum with exhibition rooms, a concert hall, spaces for artistic activities and the municipal library. The museum includes the Fritz von Wille collection, with around 80 paintings. Those interested in painting and sculpture will find a different way to explore culture here than through the city’s historical and archaeological themes. The various institutions thus offer different reasons to explore Bitburg.

Brewing History and Events

A guided tour of the Bitburger Erlebniswelt introduces visitors to the history of the brewery, brewing ingredients and beer production. The tour passes through a historic brewery building whose foundations date back to the mid-19th century. After the guided tours, guests are invited for a drink in the Bit-Lounge. The combination of production, ingredients and the building’s history makes this a distinctive experience.

In summer, concerts are held in a beer-garden atmosphere at Konrad-Adenauer-Anlage in the city centre. Bedaplatz serves different purposes: it is used as a market square and car park, as well as a venue for various large events.

Getting Around and Cycling

On 23 October 2025, an approximately 800-metre section of cycle path between the district of Masholder and the town of Bitburg was officially opened to cyclists. This information refers to that section and its opening at the time. The Bitburger Land Tourist Information Centre at the Roman Wall in the heart of Bitburg provides information about places to visit, as well as walking and cycling routes. Its shop sells regional products, souvenirs from the Eifel and Bitburger Land, and hiking maps.

When getting around with a wheelchair or pushchair, note the limitation on the Archaeological Trail: it is largely wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly, but there are two steps to negotiate at one point.
