Location

Dudeldorf is located on the B 50 between Bitburg and Wittlich, approximately 10 kilometers east of Bitburg.

Culture and History

The parish church of Maria Königin was built in 1909 in the neo-Gothic style and contains older works of art, including a 14th-century sculpture of John the Baptist. Historically, Dudeldorf was a regional center of wool weaving in the former Bitburg district; wool weavers are documented there as early as 1624.

The fortifications of Dudeldorf date from the period after 1345. Preserved sections north of the Upper Gate form a cemetery wall and enclose the castle grounds. The Upper Gate is a stately gate tower clad in ashlar, dating from 1453. Dudeldorf Castle combines a medieval residential tower, an 18th-century two-winged manor house, a courtyard with a round-arched entrance, and a garden with a pavilion.

The historic monument zone of Dudeldorf's Old Town contains long rows of craftsmen's houses and smallholder houses, as well as houses with stepped gables, open stairways, forecourts, and wells. The house at Hauptstraße 23 has a stepped gable and partial half-timbering and dates from around 1700. The house at Hauptstraße 20 is a hallway-kitchen house that probably originated around 1600 or shortly afterward; its barn bears the year 1729. The Lower Gate is a plastered gatehouse whose passageway was altered around 1840. The “Zum alten Brauhaus” inn at Herrengasse 2 is a three-part, three-story ensemble. In front of the house at Hauptstraße 17 stands a running fountain with a fountain column dating from 1859, a red sandstone trough, and a putto in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The municipal section of Dudeldorf Castle is used for exhibitions, club activities, a wedding room, and other events. Its courtyard and service building are used for cultural events.

Paths and Landscape

A historic walking tour through Dudeldorf runs between the medieval town gates. The Pestflämmchen walking trail begins at the old town wall in Dudeldorf Civic Park. The Vow Tour around Dudeldorf starts at Maria Königin, leads to six chapels and numerous wayside crosses, and ends at St. Martin in Ordorf. Dudeldorf Civic Park was planned as an intergenerational place of learning, with the aim of creating a meeting place for the community and promoting tourism.

The landscape surrounding Dudeldorf offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. The 130-kilometer Kyll Valley Cycle Route is described as being easily accessible from Dudeldorf.
