Lakeside trails between water and red sandstone

Red sandstone is exposed in striking rock formations along the shores of the reservoir. Particularly notable is the red sandstone cliff at the “Rotlay” natural monument on the Bitburg Reservoir. You will also see the name Rotlay on the lakeside promenade: the street is named after the sandstone’s intense reddish-orange colour. The cliff, the colour of the rock and the place name give the lakeside landscape its distinctive character.

For a short walk, try the “Accessible Path at the Bitburg Reservoir.” It is very easy, 1.7 kilometres long and takes about 20 minutes. The route runs from the Bitburg Reservoir kiosk to the bridge where the Prüm flows into the reservoir. The path is paved and wheelchair accessible. If you would like to plan a longer circuit instead, there is also an approximately four-kilometre lakeside circular trail at the Bitburg Reservoir. It runs mostly through wooded areas and is ideal for a leisurely walk. The different route lengths make it easy to fit a walk into your day.

Pedal boats are available at the kiosk by the Bitburg Reservoir, offering a way to explore the water. This gives you the option of getting out on the water as well as walking along the shore.

Local customs and activities

The annual calendar in Biersdorf am See also includes events organised by the field archers. They hold two tournaments each year: the village tournament on the second weekend in August and the “Hammer Zinnenschuss” on the first weekend in October. The training course of the Biersdorf am See field archers is also open to guests. If you are interested in archery, this offers another local activity alongside the trails and the reservoir.

Another custom is Hüttenbrennen, the burning of hut crosses. It takes place every year on Schafssonntag, the first Sunday after Carnival. After dark, two wooden crosses wrapped in straw and brushwood are set alight. The event combines a set date in the annual calendar with a striking local custom.
