Coast and nature

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria combines distinctive marine environments with protected landscapes and botanical diversity. La Barra is a reef that extends parallel to more than half of Las Canteras and acts as a natural breakwater. Las Canteras features five clearly distinct marine environments, ranging from the surface to depths of more than 50 metres. Anyone who can swim can explore the seabed with a simple swimming or snorkelling mask and snorkel.

El Confital is located on the La Isleta peninsula in a protected natural landscape. Several paths provide access to geological, ethnographic and historical features; El Confital also has a right-hand wave for surfing. The Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is home to the entire flora of Macaronesia across 27 hectares, including the flora of the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. Visitors can walk through laurel forest, thermophilous forest and Canarian pine forests. The succulent garden contains 2,000 specimens of succulent plants.

The Caldera de Bandama can be explored on foot via two hiking trails. The Pico de Bandama viewpoint offers a panorama of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Caldera de Bandama and large parts of the northeast of the island.

History and urban culture

Castillo de La Luz is the oldest defensive fortress in the Canary Islands. The complex was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1941 and was later classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category after responsibilities were transferred to the Autonomous Communities. Since 2014, Castillo de La Luz has been the headquarters of the Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino and a space for art, debate and culture in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where history and archaeology meet the work of the sculptor, engraver and draughtsman from Gran Canaria.

Castillo de Mata was built in 1577 next to the city wall as a defensive facility against foreign invaders and has now been converted into the Museo de la Ciudad y del Mar. The permanent exhibition is arranged around four halls and the Cubelo; the Cubelo is both the oldest and the best-preserved part of the fortress. Triana was declared a historic ensemble and a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1993.

Museums and collections

Casa de Colón is a museum dedicated to researching and communicating the history of the Canary Islands and their connection with America. Its permanent exhibition covers Columbus's voyages, cartography and navigational instruments, pre-Columbian America, relations between the Canary Islands and America, the urban geography of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from the 15th to the 19th century, and painting from the 15th to the 20th century. The interior structure follows traditional Canarian architecture and is arranged around courtyards.

The René-Verneau Hall of El Museo Canario displays an extensive collection of skulls and several mummies. The museum also presents the ways of life of a population group originating from the Berber region that inhabited the island from around the beginning of the Common Era until the 15th century, when the Castilian conquest and colonisation began.

The Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro preserves paintings, sculptures and goldsmiths' work from the religious heritage of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It forms part of the architectural complex of the Catedral de Santa Ana. Its halls surround the Patio de los Naranjos, a 17th-century cloister.

Cityscape and market

Vegueta offers a historic walk through cobbled streets, squares, churches and chapels, as well as past traditional Canarian balconies that recall the origins of the city. The Mercado de Vegueta is the oldest market in the Canary Islands. The Jet-Foil station can be reached on foot from Parque de Santa Catalina.
