Teguise preserves a historic appearance: the Real Villa de Teguise was classified as a historic-artistic architectural heritage ensemble, and its appearance has changed very little since the 19th century.

Culture

The Teatro Municipal was converted into a venue for dramatic arts in 1825 and is now the oldest surviving theatre in the province of Las Palmas. It is located on the site of the former Chapel of the Holy Spirit, which was founded in 1730. The Casa de Torres was built in the 18th century as a typical urban manor house of Lanzarote.

The former Franciscan church was converted into a museum of sacred art. Together with the former Dominican convent church, it preserves the most significant collection of Mudejar roof structures in Lanzarote. The Callejón de la Sangre was a natural passage for the water that flowed through the Barranco de Miraflores ravine to the Mareta. Its current name dates back to the repelled North African attack by Calafat in September 1569.

The Casa Museo Marqués de Herreras y Rojas initially belonged to the Dominican order and was later sold to the Spínola family. The museum extends over two levels and has a central courtyard with a gallery of balconies.

The Casa Museo El Timple combines the functions of a museum, a research centre and a cultural space. It is dedicated to one of the most representative musical instruments of the Canary Islands; its main attraction is an extensive collection of timples. Visitors can also observe the various stages of timple production there.

History

The Castillo de Santa Bárbara was converted into the present-day Museum of Canarian Emigration. At the same time, it is the oldest surviving military structure in Lanzarote. The Castillo was built in the first half of the 16th century on the Guanapay Caldera.

The convent church of Santo Domingo was founded and built at the beginning of the 18th century on a church that had already been built in the 17th century. The church of the Santo Domingo convent was converted into an exhibition hall.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was founded in the first half of the 16th century. Its tower is the tallest architectural element in Teguise, while the parish church is also considered the most important church in Lanzarote.

Experiences

The Mercadillo de La Villa de Teguise, held in the historic centre of Teguise, comprises more than 400 stalls. As the traditional and popular Mercadillo Dominical de la Villa de Teguise, it takes place every Sunday in the historic centre of the Villa de Teguise.

A walk through the cobbled streets of the historic centre of the Real Villa de Teguise is an activity for visitors. The different formats—from a tour through historic streets to a market visit—can be compared according to individual interests and the desired pace.
