Guatiza showcases the connection between a former quarry and a cactus collection at Jardín de Cactus. Jardín de Cactus was created from a former quarry for volcanic material; its terraces preserve the shape of this former quarry. The site comprises nearly 500 cactus species from around the world.
Landscape
The exposures at Cantera de Tinamala reveal the internal structure of a tuff cone composed of partially welded pyroclastic deposits from ballistic ejecta. The extraction of blocks created a particularly distinctive, terraced cut at Cantera de Tinamala.
The two landscape sites have different focal points: at Jardín de Cactus, the former use is combined with an extensive collection, while Cantera de Tinamala makes the structure of the tuff cone and the traces of block extraction visible.
For planning purposes, you can consider the garden, the geological exposures and the cultural themes as separate focal points. Different interests can be considered side by side without any single aspect having to explain the entire place.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Guatiza, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can provide a practical structure for comparison. For content planning, landscape, geology, churches, feast days and the hiking trail can be weighted separately. The different themes show which type of visit is in the foreground in each case.
Culture
At the centre of Guatiza stands the distinctive Iglesia del Cristo de las Aguas. The Cristo de las Aguas church in Guatiza contains a painting of Saint Margaret from the 18th century; construction of the Santo Cristo de las Aguas church in Guatiza began in 1832.
Guatiza’s traditional feast days in honour of Santo Cristo de las Aguas are regarded as a religious and cultural event for the local community. The Cristo de las Aguas pilgrimage honours a crucifix that, according to tradition, appeared in the sea off Los Cocoteros in the mid-19th century. The opera Aida was performed in one of the quarries belonging to Cantera de Tinamala.
Those approaching Guatiza through its culture can distinguish between church-related evidence, traditional pilgrimage history, announced feast days and the opera performance.
Hiking
The Santo Cristo de las Aguas feast days announced for 2025 included solemn processions, liturgical ceremonies, cultural activities, concerts and open-air dances. Family-friendly events were also planned. The 2025 celebration of Santo Cristo de las Aguas was open to everyone.

PR-LZ-04 between Teguise and Guatiza is considered a route for exploring the eastern part of the municipality of Teguise; at the same time, the hiking trail highlights the agricultural heritage.
The route information and the feast-day information refer to different time frames. For planning purposes, you can consider both topics separately.
