Máguez: Circular Trails, Church and Mountain Landscape

Máguez is considered one of the oldest villages in the municipality of Haría. The village lies sheltered by a group of mountains, including Los Llanos, Los Helechos, Las Quemadas, La Mesa and La Atalaya.

Hiking

“Caminando Máguez” is a dedicated hiking route in the “Caminando Haría” visitor-guidance project run by the municipality of Haría. The routes of “Caminando Haría”, including “Caminando Máguez”, are circular trails. The “Caminando Haría” guide contains route descriptions, maps and elevation profiles; detailed KML files are also available for download online.

The Haría–Máguez hiking trail connects Haría and Máguez via the 330 m-high La Atalaya volcano. The combination of a circular trail, maps, an elevation profile and KML files offers several ways to preview the route. The route information combines different levels of orientation: the circular trail and elevation profile describe the route, while the map and KML file represent it in different formats. When choosing between the routes mentioned, trail type, connection and materials therefore remain separate features.

Experiences

The Sendero La Piedra Mágica offers a short variant of 1.3 km and a long variant of 2.66 km. It starts and ends at the Aula de la Naturaleza de Máguez. The trail is intended for preschool children, including the three-, four- and five-year-old age groups. On the trail, the character María, a peasant girl from Máguez, guides children through a story about rural ways of life, customs and agricultural traditions from the past. The route explores various living organisms and natural elements in the surrounding area and ends at the Piedra Mágica. The trail is considered clearly defined and easy to find.

Culture

The church mural is made of stones from the Guatiza rofera and depicts two angels holding the tabernacle. The church also contains two lamps made of fired clay and a tabernacle door created by the ceramicist Juan Brito. Máguez Church is considered the only ecclesiastical work by an artist described as emblematic.

At the San Pedro celebrations in Máguez, the programme of events from 25 to 30 June included workshops, music, a verbena, an excursion, competitions, as well as the traditional procession and Mass.
