Mozaga in Lanzarote – Culture, Winegrowing and Festivals

Mozaga in Lanzarote combines rural culture, agricultural landscapes and winegrowing. In the village, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, the Casa Museo del Campesino was created from César Manrique’s engagement with Lanzarote’s traditional architecture and rural life.

Culture

The Casa Museo del Campesino brings together courtyards, cisterns, threshing floors, wine presses and other elements from different parts of Lanzarote. Its design shows how living, agricultural work and crafts were organised around water, climate and available resources. The Fecundidad sculpture stands on the Peña de Tajaste. It connects the Casa Museo del Campesino with the agricultural landscape of the island of Lanzarote and rural culture. Visitors can view Fecundidad from different perspectives; the sculpture changes its effect depending on distance and viewing angle, making the relationship between art, landscape and agricultural culture visible. The Plaza de los Artesanos is connected with Lanzarote’s traditional crafts and forms part of the tour through the island’s rural culture. There, visitors can learn about traditional handicrafts, techniques and materials. The restaurant at the Casa Museo del Campesino offers Lanzarote cuisine based on local products and traditional recipes. One of the notable places in Mozaga is the small church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña.

Landscape

The boundary of the La Geria Protected Landscape extends to the junction with the GC-740 in the hamlet of Mozaga. In Mozaga, the architectural ensemble of the Casa Museo del Campesino and the Fecundidad sculptural monument are located at the junction of the GC-740 Arrecife–Tinajo and the GC-730 Uga–Teguise. There, La Geria, El Jable and the artificially created sandy soils come together as different agricultural landscapes. Mozaga is located in the La Geria winegrowing region. Winegrowing in Mozaga involves creating deep planting hollows, covering them with picón or rofe, and protecting them from strong winds with semicircular stone walls. Mozaga has several wineries that offer guided tours. Bodegas de Mozaga has been offering wine since 1880 and is considered one of the oldest wineries in Lanzarote.

For 2026, the Fiesta in honour of Our Lady of La Peña includes a community barbecue around 4 August, a tapas day, traditional games, a celebratory mass and a procession on the following Sunday.
