La Hoya: Salinas de Janubio, History and Holiday Apartments

The Sitio de Interés Científico del Janubio covers 168.6 hectares in the municipality of Yaiza and protects the halophilic habitat, the species associated with it, as well as the traditional salt production that continues to be carried out there. The Salinas de Janubio are still operated using traditional methods and are the only active salt pans on Lanzarote. Up to 70 migratory bird species use the Salinas de Janubio for resting and feeding; the area is designated as a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA).

Getting around

The Ruta Volcanes follows the LZ-703 to La Hoya and the turn-off to the salt pans. Line 06 connects Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca and serves the Rotonda La Hoya stop. The Camino Natural de Órzola a Playa Blanca passes very close to the Salinas de Janubio. There is a viewpoint near La Hoya on the road to Yaiza.
