Discover Purón: River Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Purón lies on the foothills of the Sierra del Cuera.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta del Río Purón ends at the source of the Purón River and follows the river through a riparian forest. Chestnut trees, hazel bushes, alders, oaks and holly trees grow along its banks. A second route establishes a different spatial connection: Purón is the endpoint of the Ruta del Valle de Viango, which begins in the Valle de Caldueño. The two routes link Purón with different landscapes: the Ruta del Río Purón focuses on the course of the river and its source, while the Ruta del Valle de Viango approaches Purón from a valley. Visitors can therefore compare the river and valley perspectives. The routes thus differ in their point of reference: one path follows the river to its source, while the other starts in the Valle de Caldueño and ends in Purón. Together with the riparian forest, karst spring, beach and mountains, this creates a juxtaposition of river, valley, coastal and mountain perspectives.

The Nacimiento del río Purón is a karst spring that drains Carboniferous rock materials from the Sierra del Cuera. In the vicinity of Purón are Playa Ballota beach and the mountains La Corona, Peña Jortigosu and La Peñuca. The river course, riparian forest, karst spring, beach and mountains represent different natural themes and broaden the view beyond the individual trail.

Culture and Experiences

Purón features examples of traditional architecture. In addition, the 2000 film “YOU'RE THE ONE” was filmed in Purón. Traditional architecture and film both relate to Purón itself and highlight different cultural aspects.

The surrounding area of Purón is home to three museums and one monument: the Aula de la Miel de los Picos de Europa museum, the Cubes of Memory monument, the Museo de los Bolos museum and the Fundación Archivo de Indianos-Museo de la Emigración museum. The museums and the monument extend the cultural references beyond the architecture and film. The cultural information thus combines a direct connection to Purón with several institutions and a monument in the surrounding area, without equating these different forms.

Other place names include: Tresgrandas, Vibaño, San Roque Del Acebal, Ovio, Barro De Llanes, Turanzas, Andrín and Villahormes.

The coastal route from Pendueles to Llanes crosses the Purón River at Andrín via a wooden bridge.

For the overarching travel overview: Llanes.
