Barro De Llanes: Coast, Culture and Holiday Apartments

The Playa de Barro is the focal point of Barro De Llanes: it is a 250-metre-long beach with golden sand in a semi-urban setting. Two small islands protect the white sand and crystal-clear water at the Playa de Barro; the sheltered section of beach created in this way is approximately 300 metres long and has a low bathing risk. At the same time, the offshore islands separate the Playa de Barro from the neighbouring Playa de Sorraos; at low tide, the two beaches are connected. The different length figures therefore refer to the beach as a whole and to the sheltered section, and should not be read as the same stretch.

Coast

You can go snorkelling at the Playa de Barro; the water is considered very clear. The beach is accessible by car. The listed facilities include a lifeguard service, toilets, parking, showers and food and drink establishments. The Playa de Barro also has an access ramp, accessible toilets and a defibrillator at the lifeguard station.

Paths

The Senda Costera runs for approximately 65 kilometres from Bustio to Playa de Guadamía along the entire Llanes coastline and is divided into five sections. The fourth section of the coastal path passes through Barro, runs behind the Playa de Sorraos and then continues to the crossroads in the village.

Culture

The Playa de Barro served as a filming location for El Portero by Gonzalo Suárez, Historia de un Beso by José Luis Garci and the television series La Señora.

Barro is one of the two parishes in the Celorio valley through which the Way of St James passes on its route through the municipality of Llanes.

The Pendón de Barro is a large red banner that leads the San Roque procession and has been carried in the procession for more than two hundred years. During the festival in honour of Saint Roch in Barro, the procession is accompanied by the L’Alloru bagpipe band. The banner and the bagpipe band represent two different elements of the same festival.

Nature

A limestone outcrop stretches between the villages of Barro, Balmori, Quintana, Bricia and Niembro. The geological formation is thus geographically located across several named places.
