Llanes: Old Town, Coast and Senda Costera

Llanes preserves around 300 metres of a 13th-century town wall. The Old Town is designated as a historic-artistic ensemble (Conjunto Histórico-Artístico); the official history of the Villa de Llanes dates back to the beginning of the 13th century, when it received the Fuero de Independencia under the rule of Alfonso IX.

Culture and History

The Torreón de Llanes is a 13th-century defensive tower that was connected to the town wall. The Basílica de Santa María del Concejo was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The Casino de Llanes was built at the beginning of the 20th century and reflects the French architectural influence of that period; within the municipality, it is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The Palacio de Gastañaga is among Llanes' cultural assets designated as Bienes de Interés Cultural. It is located at the intersection of Calle Mayor and Plaza de Santa Ana and is one of the few surviving palaces with a medieval layout in Asturias and Llanes. Los Cubos de la Memoria, a public art installation by Agustín Ibarrola, is located on the concrete blocks of the Llanes harbour breakwater. Its shapes and colours change with the light and the water.

Nature and Coast

The Paseo de San Pedro is a landscaped promenade on cliffs that has existed since 1847, with views of Llanes, the coast and the Sierra del Cuera. The Senda Costera from Bustio to Playa de Guadamía covers approximately 65 kilometres along the entire coast of Llanes and is divided into five sections. Section III begins at the Paseo de San Pedro and runs from Llanes towards Celorio for approximately 5 kilometres.

The final section of the Senda Costera de Llanes passes Playa de Toró and Playa de Puerto Chico with its viewpoint before leading into Llanes. Playa del Sablón is the main beach of the town of Llanes, with fine sand, calm waters and a central location within the town. It has an accessible entrance to the sand and an adapted bathing service with an amphibious wheelchair for visitors with reduced mobility.
