Discover Ovio: Coastal Paths, Chapels and Asturian Festivals

The Senda Costera passes around Ovio and Picones on the San Antolín–Guadamía section. On the section between Ovio and Picones, the Capilla de San Antonio can be seen on a hilltop above the Cantabrian Sea.

Nature and Trails

The Senda Costera can be combined with a train journey for the outward or return trip. It also includes a section between Hontoria and Oviu.

Bicycle route 1 of the Ruta de los Belenes de Nueva y Valle de San Jorge passes through Oviu.

The paths around Ovio run along cliffs, hidden beaches and forests. Different types of paths and landscape areas give the stay a clearly recognisable sequence of movement, coast and nature.

This creates an alternating pattern for planning the day, with smaller paths, coastal sections and a bicycle route. The landscapes also vary: cliffs, forests, beaches and coves stand alongside views of the sea. Those who would like to alternate between physical activity and sightseeing can consider these existing highlights separately without combining them into a fixed route.

The nearby Capilla de San Antonio stands above a cove with fine, white sand. The nearby Playa de San Antonio is a small, shell-shaped cove; the cliffs of Cuevas del Mar contain cavities formed by sea erosion.

Playa de San Antonio can be reached on foot from Hotel Rural Ovio via Oviu and Picones.

Local Culture

The nearby Ermita de San Antonio was built by the Marquises de la Vega del Sella as a burial place for themselves and several generations of their family.

During the Santa Bárbara celebrations in Oviu, a solemn mass is held in the chapel of El Acebu. An espicha and a parrillada were also announced for these celebrations.

The Fiesta del Santo Ángel de la Guarda in Oviu includes a procession, regional dances and the danza prima. A communal meal with fabada, verdinas, rice pudding and grilled dishes was also announced for this fiesta.

Food and Festivals

On 14 August 2026, local gastronomy and regional products were exhibited and sold at the Mercáu Sabor de la Huerta in Oviu. The programme included the preparation, tasting and sale of fabada and Asturian pote.
