Pendueles – Coast, Camino de Santiago and Historic Architecture

Pendueles combines coastal landscapes and architectural heritage through a series of specific places and paths. Playa de Pendueles, also known as Castiello, is approximately 150 metres long and consists of gravel, dark sand and rocks.

Coast and Paths

A narrow strip of land and stones connects the beach with the island of Los Picones. From Pendueles, Playa de Pendueles can be reached via a difficult path from the surrounding cliffs. The coastal route from Pendueles to Llanes is 16.55 kilometres long; it begins in Pendueles and ends in Llanes.

Along its course, the route connects cliffs, forests, coves and fields with blowholes, including the field of Arenillas. In places, it runs through the Ría de Ribadesella - Ría de Tinamayor ZEC and ZEPA area of the Natura 2000 network. The coastal path of the Camino de Santiago passes through Pendueles, leaving the road there and continuing through La Venta and Las Cocheras.

The order of the highlights can vary depending on the preferred pace, beginning with the beach, coastal route or Camino de Santiago. A longer coastal route, the Camino de Santiago path and the difficult path to Playa form different planning considerations that can be considered separately.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Acisclo in Pendueles preserves Romanesque remains; the church also has a Gothic portal. The Casona del Conde del Valle de Pendueles dates from the 17th to the 18th century. La Casona de Verines was built in 1920 for the Indiano Ricardo Ortiz and features typical local architectural elements, including galleries supported by columns.

Every September, the Casona de Verines hosts the Encuentros de Verines, bringing together 20 to 30 writers from the various Spanish languages. The Palacio de Santa Engracia, also known as the Palacio de los Mendoza Cortina, is considered an example of late-19th-century Indian architecture.

The Palacio de la Duquesa de Santa Engracia dates from the 19th century and is an example of so-called iron architecture. During the Spanish Civil War, the Palacio de Santa Engracia housed a hospital.

Pendueles has a railway station. The station and the described paths address different aspects of travel: one belongs to arrival, while the others concern movement through the landscape and the town.
