Meré – Mountain Trails, Architectural Heritage and Holiday Apartments

El Palacio, a traditional Asturian rural building complex, stands on the AS-115 near Meré. Its large manor house dates from the period between the late 18th and 19th centuries; there is also a smaller, older building.

Nature and Trails

The El Valle de Caldueñu–Meré route passes through green mountains and meadows; native trees line the road for much of the route. From Posada, it can be reached via the AS-115 and the LLN-7. It begins on the road from Posada to Alto de Ortiguero near Meré.

The Ruta de los Pastores Merenchos is a 10-kilometre circular route with an elevation gain of 200 metres. On the descent from Mazucu, the route offers an optional footpath to Picu de los Resquilones. From there, the panoramic view stretches across almost the entire coast from Llanes to Ovio.

La Huera de Meré is located near Meré; an old water mill that is still in operation is situated nearby. The Ruta de los Pastores Merenchos starts in Meré de Llanes at the junction of the AS-115 and the LL-7 near La Huera de Meré.

The two trails have different focuses: the circular route is described in terms of its length and elevation gain, while the panoramic view is linked to a named summit. This allows distance, ascent and views to be considered separately when planning your own day.

Shepherds’ Trails and Mountain Culture

The Ruta de los Pastores de Ibéu is a one-day interpretive and ethnographic route along the paths used by shepherds from Meré to the mountains bordering Onís. It starts in Meré, passes through the abandoned hamlet of Ceu and the Vega de Ibeu, and returns through a chestnut forest.

At La Venta, the Ruta de los Pastores Merenchos offers insights into the shepherds’ way of life, including a hut used around 100 years ago, as well as equipment and working tools.

Festivals and Cuisine

The ninth Fiesta de los Tortos took place in Meré on 3 April 2026. Its programme included tortos with picadillo, Quesu and honey, as well as pisto.

The Fiesta de la Sacramental was announced in Meré for 11 July 2026; according to the programme, the Ramu procession began at the Meré cemetery.

Cultural Heritage

The Chapel of San Sebastián was founded in 1776 under the patronage of Domingo Enrique de Puertas. In Meré, it has a rectangular floor plan and a barrel vault. Cueva Cosagra, also known as Cueva Consagra or Cosagre, is listed in the Asturian cultural heritage inventory for Meré under the identifier IPCA-YA-36-047.
