Celorio between Beaches, Coastal Path and Monastic History

Celorio's coastline is particularly striking at Playa de Palombina: Celoriu's town beach offers white sand, clear water and large rock formations both on land and in the sea. A viewpoint with beautiful views complements this stretch of beach and adds a distinctive feature to the coastal landscape.

Coast and Beaches

At low tide, Playa de Palombina is connected to Playa de Las Cámaras and Playa de Los Frailes. Playa de Palombina has an access ramp as well as accessible toilets and showers; there is also a large car park. At low tide, Playa de Borizu is connected to Borizu Island, or Arnielles, by a tombolo. These changing connections make the tide level a visible part of the coastal landscape.

Playa de San Martín is accessible on foot and is usually used for surfing there. The beach is entirely natural and has no services. Celorio's coastline therefore brings together different beach characteristics: Palombina with its facilities, Borizu with its tombolo and San Martín with its natural, service-free character.

Culture

The Benedictine Monastery of San Salvador in Celorio was founded in the 11th century. It preserves a Romanesque tower with a square cross-section. The monastery church was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. Inside, there is a Gothic portal that was probably built in the 13th century.

The tower, church and portal represent different historical layers of the same monastic complex. San Salvador thus brings together its founding history, Romanesque architecture, the rebuilding of the church and a probably medieval detail inside, without the individual points of reference blending into one another.

Paths

The coastal path from Playa de Las Cámaras to Playa de San Antolín begins at Playa de Las Cámaras in Celoriu and passes via Playa de Borizu. It therefore connects several of the coastal locations mentioned above along a distinct route.

On the coastal route of the Camino de Santiago through Llanes, a detour leads to the Monastery of San Salvador de Celorio. The coastal path and the Camino detour thus offer two different perspectives on Celorio: one follows the succession of beaches, while the other establishes a connection between the route and the monastery's history.
