Vibaño – historic routes and Asturian architectural heritage

Vibaño lies in the valley of the River Bedón and in a vega; the village is divided into the two districts of Santoveña and Mediavilla. Numerous old buildings and hórreos are part of the village. Several old manor houses and architectural ensembles in Vibaño are considered worth seeing.

Geographical setting

The first section of the Ruta Histórica a Covadonga leads downhill to Vibaño. After crossing the Vibaño stream, the route passes the parish church.

History

During the occupation of the town of Llanes by Napoleonic troops in 1808, Vibaño served as a base and operations centre for the Spanish guerrillas.

The Palace of Cardinal Inguanzo in La Herrería is a typical Asturian manor house. Its south-facing main façade has two arcaded galleries.

The bridge over the River Bedón is built in the Roman style, has two semicircular arches and a roadway with a double gradient. On Cardinal Inguanzo’s orders, it was initially built for his house and later for Allende de Vibaño.

Culture

The Church of San Pedro de Vibaño has a single nave and a pronounced chancel with a straight rear wall. Among its oldest surviving elements are the corbels beneath the northern cornice of the nave; some bear carved zoomorphic and anthropomorphic motifs. The side chapels were added during the Baroque period and open onto the transept.

The medieval Torrevega tower is privately owned in Vibaño and is not open to visitors. The Humilladero de San Isidro is located at the edge of the village on a path leading to the Bustiellu fields and is a chapel open at the front. A Mass is currently held there on Saint Isidore’s Day; the former festival of the Humilladero de San Isidro is no longer celebrated.

Festivals and customs

The Fiestas del Rosariu (Vibañu) are scheduled to take place in Vibaño on 17 and 18 October 2026. The ramu at the celebration in honour of the Virgen del Rosario is a pyramid made of artisanally produced bread, crowned with a lavish arrangement of aniseed rings.

At the celebration in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, the ramu was carried in a folkloric procession to the parish church. On the church square, girls with tambourines made several circuits around the ramu; this rite is known there as “El Caracol”. A folkloric festival took place at the celebration after Mass.

The El Molín de La Pevida mill began operating in 1742 and is said to still be in operation. The family that looks after El Molín de La Pevida occasionally receives visitors there.

The three stops in Vibaño served by route 036-020 Riocaliente–IES Llanes are Vibañu, La Herrería–Cruce La Llende and Riofrío.
