Poo: Coastal Paths, Pilgrim Routes and Cultural Heritage

Playa de Poo contains a small estuarine area within the Protected Landscape of the East Coast. A narrow passage between the rocks protects the beach from the waves; at high tide, it forms a shallow natural saltwater pool. From Poo, Playa de Poo can be reached by car or on foot.

Paths and Pilgrim Routes

The Senda del Río Vallina connects Porrúa and Póo over approximately three kilometres. It passes through meadows and forests, by springs and along old paths, and ends at Playa de Poo.

Stage 3 of the Camino de Santiago leads from Poo (Llanes) to Nueva (Llanes) and is 9.5 km long. Stage 2 of the Camino de Santiago leads from Vidiago (Llanes) to Poo (Llanes) and is 11.3 km long. After crossing the railway line, it reaches Poo via the old road to Poo.

After Poo and the Arroyo Vallina, Stage 3 follows the road for approximately 800 metres; it then branches off to the right towards the Monasterio de San Salvador de Celorio. The different route lengths give you a clear comparison for planning your day.

Coastal Paths and Views

The Senda Costera Poo offers views of Playa de Poo, where the distinctive rocky islets and the island of La Almenada can be seen. The film “EL ORFANATO” (2007) was filmed on the Senda Costera Poo. The Senda Costera de Llanes: de la villa a Celoriu passes by Playa de Poo.

Culture and History

The Bolera de Poo was built in 1904 with money from Indianos. Competitions in Bolo Palma are still frequently held there. On 5 August, the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves festival is celebrated in Poo with a novena, a mass and a procession.

The Capilla de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves de Poo is listed in the inventory of Asturias’s architectural heritage. The Church of San Vicente dates from 1869. The Casona de la Jabariega is a modernist building constructed in 1905.
