Debodes: Circular Walks and Rural Culture

Debodes is associated with the Fiesta de San Pedrín: At the fiesta held in Debodes on 1 August 2019, there was a mass in the cave, a vermouth event, a romería and a verbena; the fiesta includes the salida del ramu.

Hiking

The El Valle de Caldueñu-Meré circular route begins in Debodes. Access to the circular route is from Posada via the AS-115 and the LLN-7, or from La Pereda via the LLN-7. A paved path connects Debodes in the Caldueñu valley with El Cuetu in the parish of Meré.

The Ruta de los Pastores Merenchos is a 10 km circular route with 200 metres of elevation gain and passes through Debodes. It leads to the Cuevona, which today houses the Capilla de San Pedrín. The guided Pastores Merenchos route includes an ethnographic explanation of the shepherds’ way of life at the Majada de La Venta.

The Debodes–Moandi–Picu Cima–Las Xareras circular hike begins at a large car park shortly before the bridge leading to Debodes. The Peña Blanca y Cabeza Ubena circular route begins in Debodes and passes over Peña Blanca. Different starting points, route lengths, elevation gains and named stops provide you with several objective comparison points for planning your own day.

Landscape

The path through the El Valle de Caldueñu-Meré valley offers views of the Llanes coast in a landscape of green mountains, meadows and numerous native trees. The Sierra del Cuera is a protected landscape that encompasses Llanes. Holm oak and beech forests are considered typical vegetation of the Sierra del Cuera; typical animal species include vultures, deer and wild boar.

Culture

Traditional rural architecture, as well as customs and practices passed down through the generations, shape the valley in rural Llanes. The Capilla de San Pedrín is listed in the inventory of Asturias’s architectural heritage. It is a small private chapel with a square floor plan, a pitched roof and a wooden roof structure.

The Capilla de San Pedrín consists of exposed rubble masonry; dressed ashlar stones are found at the corners and around the openings.

History

The Caserío de San Pedro is a more than 200-year-old, fully restored house with two granaries, a stone chapel and a wine press on a 40-hectare estate. The estate also includes the Caserío’s own forest with a 3 km-long path.
