Turanzas – Fiesta de San Joaquín, Paths and Landscape

Culture and Tradition

Turanzas is home to the Ermita de San Joaquín, which is closely associated with the celebrations in honor of the saint. These festivities take place at the end of August and include a traditional procession to the chapel. The musical and dance program of the Fiesta de San Joaquín includes the Jota del Cuera. The festival also includes a traditional auction of the Ramu. The procession, dance and auction give local tradition different, clearly recognizable forms.

The timing is also part of the character of the festival: the end of August is associated with the name San Joaquín and the village of Turanzas. The chapel, procession, Jota del Cuera and Ramu each represent a distinct element of the celebration.

Cultural Sites

The Museo del Oriente de Asturias in Porrúa conveys an impression of rural life and traditional architecture. The fully renovated washhouse in Turanzas has a different connection to the village. It can be reached via the footpath from Posada. At the exit of Posada, in the area around Turanzas, there is also the Indian house Villa Josefina, which is also known as “Cuatro Vientos”.

Paths and Hikes

A 952-meter-long footpath connects Turanzas with Posada. El Camín Encantáu also runs as a hiking route from La Venta via Comezán, La Maletería, Palaciu, Ardisana and Ricaliente. The route thus connects several named stops and places.

A municipal construction contract included paving the path that connects Turanzas with Posada la Vieja. The total contract value was 158,164 euros. For orientation around Turanzas, there is therefore a 952-meter-long connecting path, a route with several stops and a paved path to Posada la Vieja.

Landscape and History

In 1713, the Cuesta de Sabina in Turanzas was a slope used communally by the residents and was considered difficult. The name therefore refers not only to a specific slope, but also to its former communal use.

In 1713, the south of the parish of Posada de Llanes contained enclosed hills, mountains and rocks with wild vegetation. These areas served as pasture for the livestock of the local residents. The historic landscape thus appears both as terrain with slopes, mountains and rocks and as a communally used grazing area.
