Castejón Del Puente: Paths between history and the Cinca floodplain

At Tozal de las Aguaderas, a circular trail outside the hill passes through a defensive position with numerous machine-gun nests and fortifications. Underground shelters provided protection for the troops.

Culture and history

The Iglesia de la Asunción, also known as Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is a Gothic church. It was built directly on exposed rock on a hill at the edge of Castejón Del Puente and overlooks the village and the Cinca valley.

The Ermita de la Bella is a rectangular Romanesque chapel with a pointed-arch vault; at the west end, a portal with a semicircular arch has been preserved.

The Gothic church and the Romanesque chapel therefore represent two different architectural forms; at the Ermita, both the pointed-arch vault and the semicircular-arch portal have been preserved.

The most important local festival takes place on September 8 in honour of La Virgen de la Bella.

The Castillo de Castejón Del Puente is included in the list of castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural.

At the Noria de la Huerta Vieja, the masonry structure that once supported its lifting wheel has been preserved. Behind the noria, the remains of the Cequiero's hut can also be seen. The Noria de la Huerta Vieja and a similar noria in Almudévar are the only surviving examples in Alto Aragón.

Nature on the Cinca

After a section through holm-oak forest, low scrubland and cultivated land, the 4.8 km Sotos del Río Cinca route leads to a floodplain forest with meanders and pebble beaches. The 4.8 kilometres make the sequence of landscape areas comparable as a manageable walking distance. This route offers opportunities for birdwatching, including white storks, eagle owls, ospreys and Egyptian vultures.

The route connects wooded, open and river-dominated sections within the same stretch.
