Discover Azanúy: Culture, Landscapes and Holiday Apartments

Azanúy is located in La Litera Alta above a rocky, mountainous landscape that differs from the southern plain; at the same time, the townscape is characterised by medieval and Renaissance buildings.

Culture

Several historic houses in Azanúy preserve open galleries with round arches, characteristic of Aragonese civil architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. Casa Valonga is associated with an Aragonese Infanzón family whose origins lie in Monzón and which has been documented since the 16th century. The parish church of Azanúy has a three-nave interior, a transept and a hemispherical dome with lanterns dating from the 18th century.

The cisterns of Azanúy are carved into sandstone outcrops beside the path and were created to store rainwater as drinking water. In the vicinity of Azanúy, the Necrópolis de Maranyol contains the remains of a medieval settlement southwest of the present-day town. The Hostiario de Azanuy is an iron Eucharistic object from the 14th century, originates from Azanuy and is kept at the Barbastro-Monzón Diocesan Museum.

Due to its location, the Ermita de Santa Bárbara is an excellent viewpoint. The La Cimbrella and Lagualí cisterns are located near the centre of Azanuy, on the path to the Ermita de Santa Bárbara.

Events

Azanuy's Semana Cultural takes place at the same time as the feast of Saint Sebastian on 20 January. On 4 December, a pilgrimage leads to the Ermita de Santa Bárbara.
