Hoz de Jaca – Views, Trails and Culture

Above the Búbal Reservoir, the Mirador del Muro projects out like a balcony with views across the valley. The Mirador del Muro is located at an elevation of 1,270 metres and offers views of the Búbal Reservoir. North of Hoz de Jaca, the Camino Frazacoz footpath to Panticosa passes through a dense boxwood forest with lush vegetation and lies on the shaded slope. Its route connects the direction towards Panticosa with a distinctly described woodland landscape.

The Camino de Santa Elena y Biescas footpath runs from Hoz de Jaca along the left bank of the Río Gállego to Santa Elena. From there, you can continue along the same bank to Biescas. The path therefore follows the stated riverbank throughout and continues beyond Santa Elena.

A forest track beginning in the municipal area of Hoz de Jaca leads for approximately 12 kilometres to the mountain lakes of Sabocos and Asnos and offers exceptional views. Its approximate length and the two named lakes give this route its own distinctive character.

The „Apadrina tu sendero“ project includes the restoration of paths and footpaths for hiking, as well as the preservation of the ethnographic heritage of the municipality of Hoz de Jaca. The paths are thus connected both with their preservation and with the municipality’s ethnographic heritage.

The trails described differ in route and landscape: the Camino Frazacoz passes through boxwood forest on the shaded slope, the Camino de Santa Elena y Biescas follows the left bank of the Río Gállego, and the forest track leads for approximately 12 kilometres to two mountain lakes.

Culture and Local Events

The parish church of Santos Reyes is a Baroque church dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. This classification connects the church with a clearly named period and a long time span.

The monument to transhumance in Hoz de Jaca honours transhumance. In addition to the church, the town therefore also has a monument dedicated to an explicitly named historical theme.

The festivals of Hoz de Jaca are celebrated in August in honour of San Lorenzo. The dinner featuring Oveja a la pastora takes place on 14 August in the village square of Hoz de Jaca and is prepared by the residents.

Activities on the Water and at High Altitude

The Tirolina Valle de Tena starts at the Mirador de Hoz de Jaca and extends 950 metres over the Búbal Reservoir at a height of more than 20 metres. The starting point, route length and height are clearly specified.

Solpena begins in Hoz de Jaca at the Vicen Bridge. This starting point adds to the information about the other activities on the water and at high altitude.

At the Mirador de Hoz de Jaca, migratory birds, large birds of prey and birds inhabiting rocky environments can be observed with binoculars and a telescope. The observation therefore covers three explicitly named bird groups and uses two optical devices.
