Barbastro – Culture, Markets and Trails

Barbastro’s historic-artistic ensemble was declared a historic-artistic heritage ensemble in 1975. During Holy Week, seven brotherhoods parade through the streets of Barbastro every year with their procession figures, bearers and members. They are accompanied by bands with drums, bass drums and cornets.

Culture

Barbastro Cathedral was built between 1517 and 1533. Inside, 485 gilded and polychrome roses form a starry sky. The original Iglesia de San Francisco dates from the 16th century; it preserves a pointed arch in the central nave and houses a crypt with seated burials in a side chapel.

The historic building housing the Museo Diocesano Barbastro-Monzón contains a collection of more than 270 objects. The Iglesia de San Julián was built in the 16th century as the chapel of the former Barbastro hospital and houses the Centro de Interpretación del Somontano.

The Museo de los Mártires Claretianos is dedicated to the 51 beatified Claretian missionaries from Barbastro who were shot at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Their remains and some personal belongings are kept in the crypt of its chapel.

History

The Pozo de Hielo de La Barbacana was built in 1612. It has been restored since 2006 and equipped as a visitor centre. It explains the production and preservation of ice, the storage and distribution of snow, and its former use through reconstructions and audiovisual techniques.

Flavours and Wine

The Crespillo Festival has been celebrated in Barbastro since 1994 and is recognised as an event of tourist interest in Aragón. To make Crespillos, borage leaves are coated with flour, egg and other ingredients such as gaseosa or orange juice, then fried and refined with aniseed and sugar; the additional ingredients may vary depending on the person preparing them.

The town’s traditional fruit and vegetable market takes place every Saturday morning in the Plaza del Mercado. The Somontano Wine Route begins in Barbastro. The Espacio del Vino presents the Somontano designation of origin through an audiovisual presentation and a game for identifying wine aromas.

Trails and Events

From Barbastro, you can follow the GR 45 on foot or by bicycle towards Burceat and Cregenzán. The San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer Route in Barbastro is offered in both self-guided and guided versions. Different means of transport and the two forms of accompaniment provide factual points of comparison for planning the day.

A new edition of the Fiesta del Plantero was organised in Barbastro for 9 May 2026 as a family-friendly and festive event promoting Barbastro’s traditional horticulture and the Tomate Rosa de Barbastro quality mark.
