Alquézar: Medieval Townscape and Pasarelas

Alquézar is located in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park at the foot of the Pyrenees in the province of Huesca. Alquézar’s historic townscape preserves its medieval layout and cobbled streets. Covered passageways, known as “callizos”, are a characteristic feature of Alquézar’s historic streets. The town of Alquézar was designated a Historic-Artistic Site by Royal Decree of 26 February 1982.

Culture

The Museo Casa Fabián is housed in a 17th-century building and contains a possibly medieval oil mill carved into the rock. It displays agricultural tools and household objects associated with mowing, grape harvesting, olive gathering, working with plant fibres and various crafts. The collegiate church of Alquézar originated as an Arab fortress founded in the 9th century by the Muslim military leader Jalaf ibn Rasid ibn Asad. Its cloister is the only one in Aragón to have been fully preserved with its paintings. The present-day church of the collegiate church of Alquézar was built in the 16th century and dedicated to Santa María.

Hiking Trails and Nature

The starting point for the route to the Quizans and Chimiachas rock-art caves is next to Alquézar’s municipal swimming pools. It has an information board. The Pasarelas route begins directly opposite Alquézar Town Hall on Calle de la Iglesia. The Pasarelas de Alquézar is a 3 km circular mountain trail with a total elevation difference of 175 m. The Pasarelas route follows a one-way trail through the gorge of the Río Vero and takes around two hours. On the Ruta Mirador de Chimiachas, visitors can observe griffon vultures, bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures and peregrine falcons.

Climbing is permitted year-round in Sector 37 of Alquézar. In the Monchiriguel sector, Alquézar has a climbing area suitable for beginners, with routes graded IV to 6b+. The Balsas de Basacol are a good place to cool off.
