Culture and History

Monzón takes you right into the history of the Templar Order. Within a later ring wall dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, the Castillo de Monzón contains five actual Templar buildings from the 12th century. The medieval district of Monzón is one of the most complete and best-preserved monastery-like military complexes characteristic of the Templar Order. The chronological layering is clear: the five Templar buildings belong to the 12th century, while the ring wall surrounding them was not built until later, in the 17th and 18th centuries; medieval structures and later fortifications therefore form part of the same complex.

The Catedral de Santa María del Romeral was declared a national monument and is listed in the general register of Aragonese cultural heritage as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monumento Histórico-Artístico category. From the 13th to the 17th century, it served as the venue for the Cortes of the Kingdom and the general Cortes of the Crown of Aragon. For tourist visits, it is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 12:45 to 13:30. For planning your day, this opening information is a separate fixed time slot.

Exhibitions and Events

The Centro de Interpretación de la Línea del Cinca displays replicas of a field hospital, a shelter, a machine-gun nest, completed and unfinished trenches, and a command post. The exhibition on Civil War-era fortifications is located in the basement, ground floor and first floor; the ethnographic exhibition is located on the second floor and in the attic. For the visit, the content can be organised according to the themes of fortification history and ethnography. The arrangement by floor further separates these focuses: the fortifications occupy the three lower levels, while the ethnographic exhibition occupies the two upper levels.

The Casa Natal de Joaquín Costa houses a museum dedicated to Joaquín Costa. At the same time, it serves as an interpretation centre and as the headquarters of the Centro de estudios de la historia de Monzón (Cehimo). The museum, interpretation centre and headquarters of this organisation combine a biographical perspective with the history of Monzón. The Casa Natal thus brings together a biographical museum, an interpretation centre and the work of Cehimo under one roof.

The Homenaje Templario a Jaime I y Guillem de Mont-rodón is an event for historical reconstruction organised by the Monzón municipal administration. It has been held in Monzón since 2001 on the fourth weekend of May.
