Loporzano: Guara Landscape, Culture and Trails

Loporzano is considered one of the starting points from which visitors can reach the Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara. From Loporzano, the Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara is described as a protected limestone landscape with caves, shafts, springs, karren fields, sinkholes and poljes. Nature

The Embalse de Vadiello occupies part of the gorge of the Guatizalema River at the foot of the Mallos de Ligüerri. Another route runs through the Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara and passes through several villages in the municipality of Loporzano. In the Vadiello area, one route forms a loop around the Vadiello area and the rock chapel of San Chinés, which lies beneath striking conglomerate walls.

Routes and Activities

The Loporzano–Sasa del Abadiado route leads from Loporzano via the Fuente Vieja to Sasa del Abadiado. Another route begins at the San Julián de Banzo car park, passes over the Collado de San Salvador and leads to the Ermita de San Martín de la Val de Onsera. In the Vadiello area, visitors can hike to the rock chapels of San Chinés and San Cosme and San Damián.

The Via Ferrata Canal del Palomo near Santa Eulalia La Mayor is accessible from the woodland beside the road to Vadiello; the return route leads from the top of the Via Ferrata through the Circo d' O Ciego. In the Vadiello area, climbing on the Mallos and caving in the surrounding caves are offered as activities. A circular route leads from the Ermita de la Virgen del Viñedo via Loporzano to Bandalíes and back to the Ermita de la Virgen del Viñedo. Culture and History

The Galería de Willi Frissen in Loporzano permanently displays works by the Belgian painter Willi Frissen. Loporzano has traditional manor houses typical of the foothills of the Sierra de Guara; many bear the coats of arms of important local families. The parish church of San Salvador in Loporzano was begun at the end of the 16th century under Hernando Abadía, and its significant extension took place in the 18th century. The El Amorcillo fountain in Loporzano is a work by the Parisian artist Durenne from the 19th century.

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo is an 18th-century building and was historically the religious centre of the area known as the Abadiado. The hostel attached to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo houses the Punto de Información El Viñedo. The oil mill of Castilsabás preserves a screw press with a 12-metre-long central beam; an inscription bears the year 1886. A path slightly more than 100 metres long connects the oil mill with the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo.

Peña de los Moros, also known as Peña Mora, in Santa Eulalia la Mayor within the municipality of Loporzano, is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the archaeological zone category. The Estrecho Quinto zone, shared between Siétamo and Loporzano, was a front-line area for a long period; trenches, bunkers and caves are located there. Loporzano's main festival takes place on 20 January in honour of San Fabián and San Sebastián.
