Nature at the Lagoon

The Laguna de Sariñena covers 204 hectares and has a circumference of approximately 8 kilometres. It is Aragon’s most important breeding site for the Eurasian bittern and is home to 10% of the Iberian population of this species, which is endangered on the Iberian Peninsula.

Under Decree 70/1995 of 4 April, the Laguna de Sariñena is designated as a Refugio de Fauna Silvestre; it is also designated as a special protection area for birds (ZEPA) under the order of 20 August 2001. In addition to the Laguna de Sariñena, the Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza offers visitors walking and cycling routes.

Culture and History

The Museo de La Laguna is housed in a renovated building of Aragonese civil architecture and is divided into three exhibition areas. The lagoon room at the Museo de La Laguna complements a visit to the Laguna de Sariñena with models and photographs.

Construction of the Iglesia Parroquial San Salvador began in 1796 and was completed in the mid-19th century. The Ermita de Santiago is the oldest surviving historical and architectural element of Sariñena and dates from the 13th century.

The area around the Ermita de Santiago includes a restored 16th-century ice house and a landscaped visitor area. The Torreón de los Foces was restored in 2011 and converted into the Centro de Interpretación del Dance de Sariñena.

The Cartuja de Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes in Sariñena is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It is also known as the Cartuja de los Monegros and was the first Carthusian monastery founded in the Kingdom of Aragón.

Memorial Sites and Festivals

The remains of the Aeródromo Alas Rojas extend along the HU-V-8.301 road connecting Sariñena and Albalatillo. The remains include 30 linear metres of trench, a rifle position, two machine-gun emplacements, an anti-aircraft machine-gun position and entrances to an ammunition bunker below.

Information panels on site explain the individual elements. The remains of the Aeródromo Alas Rojas can be visited independently.

The Dance de Sariñena is performed again in Sariñena on 15 May, with a procession parade. FEMOGA is an industrial, agricultural and livestock fair held annually in Sariñena.

Sariñena has a rich tradition of meat products, represented in the local butcher shops.
