Ibieca combines religious architecture, traditional festivals and trails through a rural landscape.

Depending on the time of year and your interests, you can place different emphasis on Ibieca’s ecclesiastical architecture, landscape, trails and festival traditions.

Culture and History

The parish church of San Clemente is a Renaissance building from the mid-16th century, with later Baroque additions from the 18th century. The rectangular floor plan comprises a single-nave church and side chapels; the chancel has a polygonal end, and the bell tower projects from the north wall.

The settlement of Ibieca is laid out around the main square and the parish church of San Clemente.

The church of San Miguel de Foces was built in 1249 as the family pantheon of the Foces family. It lies about two kilometres from Ibieca and is the only surviving part of the monastery founded by the Foces family.

San Miguel de Foces was declared a national monument in 1916; its classification as an Asset of Cultural Interest was completed by an Aragonese order published in 2004.

San Miguel de Foces preserves four arcosolia with associated pairs of sarcophagi, decorated with frescoes in the Linear Gothic style dating from 1302.

Peña Mora is an artificial cave carved into sandstone, with a small entrance leading into a long horizontal passage. Peña Mora is associated with fertility rites in which married women hoped to become pregnant.

Landscape and Trails

The landscape around Ibieca is characterised by cereal cultivation, olive trees and wheat.

Ibieca forms part of the Camino Natural de la Hoya de Huesca.

From Ibieca, the route leads to the hermitage of San Miguel de Foces; there, the trail turns east and continues to Sieso de Huesca and Casbas de Huesca.

The municipal trail to Peña Mora begins at the hermitage of San Miguel de Foces. First, follow a track to the right for about 700 metres; then continue for another approximately 300 metres along a track that branches off to the left.

Festivals and Traditions

The first pilgrimage to San Miguel de Foces takes place on 15 May or on the nearest Sunday. During it, the residents of Ibieca carry the Virgen de Foces from Foces to the parish church in Ibieca.

Ibieca’s main festival is dedicated to San Clemente and was traditionally held on 23 November; today, it is celebrated during Holy Week. You can compare the different festival dates and routes according to your interests and the time of year you travel.
