In Grañén, the Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago is a Gothic church dating from the 16th century. It incorporates the remains of a Romanesque church and a defensive tower from the 15th century. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross. Inside the church is a Renaissance altarpiece by Pedro de Aponte and Cristóbal de Cardeñosa, dedicated to the apostle Santiago and Saint John the Evangelist.

Culture

Beneath the sandstone rock on which Grañén stands are underground passageways and shelters. They bear witness to how the Spanish Civil War was experienced locally. Those interested in culture and local history can consider the two topics separately: sacred architecture on the one hand, and historical traces beneath the rock on the other. The two approaches can be understood as different cultural focal points.

Nature

In Fraella, the short Fuente de los Recuerdos route leads to a spring that supplied the local population with water for centuries. The Mirador de la Buitrera route allows you to observe the vultures living there from the Mirador de la Serreta. The Mirador de Languardia itinerary follows sections of several livestock trails. The Tozal de La Andeta route leads to places such as the Raja Miramiel.

For planning your day, you can consider the different types of trails and destinations side by side. When several interests come together, you can weigh nature observation, route layout and destination as separate criteria. A short spring trail, wildlife observation, sections of livestock trails and a specifically named place each provide different focal points, without requiring you to combine them into a single route.

Festivals and Experiences

In Grañén, the Fiesta de Santa Águeda is celebrated on 5 February. Traditional customs associated with this celebration include Rosca races in various streets of the town centre; the traditional Roscón de Santa Águeda is awarded as the prize. You can consider the date and the custom as two separate aspects of planning: the date on the one hand, and the events in the town centre on the other.

The Agrupación Astronómica de Grañén offers astronomical observations with telescopes. Its programme also includes workshops and talks. Observation, workshop and talk are different formats that you can incorporate separately into your day’s plans. The combination of observing, workshops and talks offers different ways to engage with the sky.
