Lanaja: Cultural Heritage, Los Monegros and Wine

In Lanaja stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with two naves, of which the northern one is significantly older. Its Gothic portal has five pointed archivolts and slender columns.

Culture

The architectural heritage includes the Pozo de Hielo of Lanaja, a cylindrical cistern with a diameter of 6 metres and a height of more than 11 metres, covered by a masonry dome. Ice collected in winter was stored there for use in summer. The hermitage of Santa Bárbara lies on the road to Poleñino, about 1 kilometre from Lanaja, and is almost completely destroyed. At the same time, it is a 19th-century structure partially integrated into the rock, with folk paintings and niches.

The Caño is an underground structure about 400 metres long in the north of Lanaja; it cannot currently be visited.

History

The Búnker de Lanaja is a reinforced-concrete facility for machine guns, or a machine-gun emplacement, a fort and an observation post with a 180-degree field of view within the Línea Lennin defence system. At the bunker, a section of a connecting trench was reconstructed to illustrate the position's defence strategy. The Dance of Lanaja is regarded as a mixed tradition of men and women, with processions through the streets and dances in the square, including the eagerly anticipated ribbon dance.

Regional Heritage

In the wider regional area, the Cartuja de las Fuentes lies a few kilometres from Lanaja and contains more than 1,000 square metres of late-Baroque wall paintings.
