Riglos with Mallos, hiking trails and panoramic views

The Mallos de Riglos are exceptional reddish geological formations and large vertical or rounded walls of rock or conglomerate that are characteristic of the Hoya de Huesca. They are protected as part of the Natural Monument of the Mallos de Riglos, Agüero and Peña Rueba. Iron-rich materials give some of the Mallos reddish hues, which become more intense at sunset.

Hiking trails and climbing

Two signposted hiking trails lead from Riglos: the Circular Mallos de Riglos and the Camino del Solano. A circular hike starting and ending in Riglos leads via the Embalse de La Peña and the Foz de Escalete. The different types of routes can be compared for your own daily planning based on distance and points of interest. The two signposted trails and the circular hike differ in their routes and the points of interest mentioned; the via ferrata adds a vertical focus. Around 200 climbing routes have been established in Riglos; most have a high level of difficulty. The “Vía ferrata Riglos | Cubilillo os Fils” via ferrata is located next to the Mallos de Riglos. During the ascent, iron rungs heighten the sense of verticality and give it a distinctive character.

Views and birdlife

The Mirador de Espinalba offers views over the Reino de los Mallos and the Río Gállego. The Mirador de los Buitres offers panoramic views of the Mallos de Riglos. It has parking spaces, a ramp to the viewpoint, and tactile signage in Braille and with raised illustrations; the viewpoint has been adapted for people with reduced mobility or visual impairments. The Mallos de Riglos are home to one of Europe's most significant griffon vulture colonies. The ARCAZ Bird and Scavenger Interpretation Centre in Riglos has a glazed observation point for birdwatching and video cameras; it is currently closed.

Railway and landscape

The Tren Geológico del Prepirineo combines a journey on the Canfranero, intermediate stops, hiking sections and environmental interpretation by specialised guides in landscapes such as the Mallos de Riglos, the Foz de Escalete and the Embalse de La Peña. Intermediate stops, hiking sections and environmental interpretation thereby combine travel and landscape exploration within the same offering. The Canfranero can take travellers from La Peña to Riglos via the Río Gállego.

Culture and festivals

At the entrance to Riglos stands the Romanesque hermitage of San Martín, which dates from the 12th century. The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Mallo in Riglos is home to the veneration of the two Romanesque Madonnas, Virgen del Mallo and Virgen de Carcavilla. In Riglos, the Virgen del Mallo festival is celebrated on 1 June; San Sebastián is celebrated on 20 January. The two dates provide different seasonal anchors in the local calendar.
