Discover Estadilla: Culture, Nature and Trails
The Fuente de los Doce Caños in Estadilla was built in 1735 and has twelve spouts that pour water through the mouths of lion heads. The Ruta Ornitológica begins at this spring; it follows a circular route along various paths through different landscape areas.
Landscape
The 1,108-metre-high Pico Buñero offers views of the Cinca and Ésera valleys, the Pyrenean peaks of Ribagorza and Sobrarbe, the Sierra de Guara and Somontano. At the foot of the Pre-Pyrenees lies the Sierra de la Carrodilla, which is characterised by diverse vegetation, wildlife and exceptionally beautiful natural landscapes. The municipality of Estadilla, with an area of 53.53 hectares, forms part of the Site of Community Importance LIC Ríos Cinca y Alcanadre.
Culture
Estadilla's Plaza Mayor is lined with arcades; the town hall is located there in a Renaissance-style 16th-century Aragonese palace. The parish church of Estadilla is Gothic in style and stands on the site of a former castle, of which only the remains of the walls survive today.
Forau del Cocho, Cueva de La Carrodilla is included in the Aragonese list of caves and rock shelters with rock art classified as Assets of Cultural Interest. The Abrigo del Engardaixo rock shelter belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.
The surviving architectural elements suggest that the present-day Santuario de la Carrodilla was built between the 14th and 15th centuries; it consists of a single nave with eight chapels added later. At the end of December, Estadilla hosts the Belén Viviente, in which local residents take part in more than thirty scenes.
Trails and Water
The Ruta Ornitológica runs through Estadilla's fruit-growing and horticultural areas. Thirty nest boxes for various species have been installed there, and the areas are used for birdwatching. The Ruta del Agua is an easy circular route through Estadilla's huertas, following the watercourse to the former Baños de Estadilla. It runs along old irrigation channels and passes small waterfalls and cascades.
