Ansó: Holiday apartments between historic character and nature park

Ansó is surrounded by mountains and forests that form part of the Parque Natural de los Valles Occidentales. The historic ensemble is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC). In the town centre, three longitudinal streets structure the ensemble and converge at an open square in front of the parish church of San Pedro.

Culture

The traditional houses are built from grey local natural stone and covered with flat ceramic tiles or stone slabs. The parish church of San Pedro is a Late Gothic building from the beginning of the 16th century, constructed on the site of a predecessor dating from the 6th century.

La Torreta is a restored tower in the centre of Ansó. The Ermita de Santa Bárbara is a rectangular masonry chapel with a gabled roof made of small slate slabs. The Museo del Traje Ansotano is an exhibition space dedicated to Ansó’s traditional costume.

The Día del Traje Típico Ansotano has received the Spanish designation Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. The Día de exaltación del Traje Ansotano features reenactments of traditional customs, a traditional costume parade, a festive Mass and, in the afternoon, a popular festival. The Día de exaltación del Traje Ansotano takes place on the last Sunday in August, unless that day falls on the final day of the month. The Museo del Traje Ansotano offers 30-minute guided tours; visitors can also explore it independently during opening hours.

Nature and landscape

The Centro de Interpretación de Ansó presents an interactive exhibition about the natural and human environment of the Parque Natural de los Valles Occidentales. The exhibition covers the brown bear, geology, wildlife and vegetation, as well as traditional uses including pastoral farming.

Trails

The Villa de Ansó–Paco Ezpelá hiking trail begins at the recreation area beside the bridge over the Veral River in Ansó. It runs along a shady mountainside with beech trees, pines, hazel bushes and boxwood, and provides access to the Eslinaderas viewpoint.

The Puente de Zabalcoch–Borda Chimena hiking trail begins 20 metres before the Puente de Zabalcoch on the road from Ansó towards Zuriza. Its final section follows the Veral River and offers possible sightings of trout, white-throated dippers and otters.

The long-distance GR 15 trail leaves Ansó in a westerly direction, crosses a bridge and continues towards Fago. The GR-15 stage from Ansó to Aragüés del Puerto is 20.8 km long and has a stated walking time of 7 hours and 5 minutes. Starting points, directions, walking time and stage length provide different specific reference points for planning your day.

The Foces de Fago y Biniés Protected Landscape Area is home to bird species associated with cliffs and steep slopes, such as griffon vultures, bearded vultures and wallcreepers.
