Discover Sabayés: Holiday Apartment Between History and Nature

The parish church of San Andrés in Sabayés is a Romanesque building that was remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. It contains a main altarpiece modelled in plaster; two side panels and a crowning section with three folk-style depictions have been preserved. Outside, cornices divide the church tower into five sections. The tower is considered a defensive bell tower and follows the model of those towers that protected the Pyrenean mountains.

Culture

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio is a single-nave building made of ashlar stone, with side altars beneath round arches. Outside the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio stands a house for the santeros, built in 1760. Locally, the chapel is known as “Gallinano”; the name derives from an oral tradition according to which chickens warned of an attempted theft of the image of the Virgin by crowing like roosters.

The Fuente de los Huertos is a 17th- or 18th-century fountain of Renaissance type, built from sandstone blocks and featuring a round arch. The Fuente de los Huertos complex includes a small livestock trough, a washhouse and a basin for collecting irrigation water from the adjoining gardens.

History

Among the remains of Sabayés Castle is a rectangular depression excavated into the ground, which is believed to be a cistern. The remains of Sabayés Castle also include the ruin of a rectangular tower. Beneath the castle hill of Sabayés and in other parts of the village, there are wine cellars carved into the rock. Their largely constant humidity and temperature levels favoured the fermentation and storage of the wine produced in Sabayés.

The built ensemble of Sabayés lies in a defensive setting due to its strategic location. The Arco Coscullano was the former entrance to the fortified area of Sabayés.

Nature and Trails

Sabayés lies at the foot of the Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara. The natural monument of Salto de Roldán is visible from Sabayés.
