Apiés: San Félix, Rock Art and Sierra y Cañones de Guara

The parish church of San Félix in Apiés is built of ashlar stone and has a semicircular apse facing east. It dates from the late 12th or early 13th century and was restored in the 1940s. A portal with six archivolts is also part of this building. The church’s design, orientation and restoration offer different perspectives on the building.

Culture and History

Apiés preserves examples of 17th- and 18th-century Aragonese architecture. The oldest buildings in the village retain structural features characteristic of the Somontano. The village layout also includes wide, straight streets. At the entrance to the village stands an 18th-century wayside cross. When looking at the village, you can distinguish between older architectural forms, traces from later periods and the layout of the streets.

La Costera I in Apiés is listed among the caves and rock shelters with rock art that are considered Cultural Heritage Sites of Special Interest (Bienes de Interés Cultural). La Costera II consists of three connected panels at the foot of a small cliff overlooking a large part of the Hoya de Huesca. This rock art group is one of the few documented rock art groups in the province of Huesca. For classification purposes, the listing status of La Costera I and the form and regional context of La Costera II can be considered separately.

Nature

Salto de Roldán is a geological site of special interest and is located in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park. Apiés is near one of the entrances to the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park. The nature park connection and the individual geological site represent two separate landscape references, which you can weigh differently when planning your own trip.

Routes

The upper area of Salto de Roldán can be reached by car via the road between Sabayés and Santa Eulalia de la Peña. The proposed route leads from the Salto de Roldán car park to Peña de San Miguel.

The Via ferrata de la Peña de San Miguel runs below the final tower of Peña de San Miguel; at a narrowing passage, it is equipped with a safety rope. It begins at a prepared car park on the road to the Cienfuens Reservoir. Information about the road, car park and route can be used separately for planning your own excursion.

Festival

Apiés celebrates an annual festival on 8 December in honour of the Immaculate Conception. The festival includes a performance by the village dancers. The fixed date and the routes described address different types of travel planning in terms of timing and content.
