Arro: Towers, Churches and Pilgrimage

Arro combines distinctive architectural forms, religious architecture and religious customs. Different buildings, spatial points of reference and a fixed pilgrimage date each provide their own focus. The Torre de casa la Abadía is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. Its circular ground plan rises above the gabled roof of the residential building. Two cylindrical structures of different diameters form the tower; an edge separates them from each other.

In the centre of Arro is the Iglesia de la Asunción. The rubble-masonry building has a rectangular nave, a straight-ended chancel facing east and two chapels on each side. The bell tower of Arro’s parish church, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, resembles the bell tower of Aínsa.

The vernacular architecture of Arro includes several chimneys of the Alto-Aragonese type. The apse of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is semicircular, built of rubble masonry and covered with a barrel vault.

Townscape and Points of Reference

The Torre de casa la Abadía is located on the town’s only street, in the higher part of the settlement. The Iglesia de la Asunción is in the centre of Arro. The square in Arro also serves as a viewpoint and offers beautiful views over Sobrarbe.

Casa Lanao is located on the outskirts of Arro. An asphalt track leads there, branching off from the road between Arro and Aínsa. For orientation, you can distinguish between the higher part of the settlement, the town centre, the viewpoint and the outskirts.

Religious Routes and Customs

The Ermita de la Virgen de los Dolores can be reached via the road to San Victorián Monastery, which begins near Arro. A pilgrimage takes place at this hermitage on the Friday before Good Friday. It is attended by residents of Arro as well as residents from several villages in La Fueva. During the pilgrimage, Mass is celebrated, the fields are blessed and alms are distributed.
