Fago – Village Character, Culture and Hiking Trails

In Fago’s historic village centre, narrow cobbled streets, traditional stone houses, wooden balconies and large conical chimneys shape the townscape.

Culture

The parish church of Fago dates from the 16th century. The interior of the Church of San Andrés contains 17th-century altarpieces, including the high altar dedicated to Saint Andrew. Fago’s church preserves a Romanesque tympanum from its former portal, decorated with a characteristic Chrismon. The remains of an old mill in Fago have been prepared for visitors. La Tejería is the former site where the typical roof tiles for Fago’s houses were made.

The language is also part of the village’s cultural character: Fabla, more precisely the local Fagotan–Ansotan variety of Navarrese-Aragonese Romance, is still spoken to a limited extent in Fago. On 23 April, the annual pilgrimage to the Virgen de Puyeta sets out from Fago; it includes a Mass and a communal picnic.

Nature

In Fago, the San Juan and Baldescalera gorges join to form the Barranco de Fago. A walk offers 360-degree panoramic views of Fago and the surrounding area; along the way, visitors can see the local flora and fauna, gardens, fields and two small woods. A small viewpoint offers a view of Fago and its valley.

Trails and Activities

Fago can be reached by car via the N-240 through Villareal and Majones, via the A-176 from Hecho or Ansó, and via the NA-176 from Roncal towards Fago. The old path between Ansó and Fago is signposted and has been prepared for hiking. A section of the GR 15 in Fago is 4.3 kilometres long, takes a little over an hour and a half and is rated as low difficulty.

Hikes lasting 2 to 4 hours are considered easy in Fago and suitable for a broad range of ages. The different trail lengths, time frames and difficulty levels can be compared directly when planning a day of hiking. The area around Fago offers opportunities for active tourism and mountain sports such as cycling, hiking, mountaineering, mushroom excursions, mountain biking and fishing.
