Nature and Trails

An alpine section of the GR 11 Senda Pirenaica begins at the Casa de Piedra mountain refuge in the Balneario de Panticosa area.

The El Sarrio high-mountain train takes visitors in 55 minutes to a valley from which a network of well-signposted trails leads to waterfalls, mountain refuges and high-altitude mountain lakes.

From the upper station of the Telecabina de Panticosa, located at 1,900 metres, trails lead to the Asnos and Sabocos glacial lakes.

Estrimal is an alpine ski run that leads down to the village of Panticosa. Cross-country skiing equipment and snowshoes are available for hire at the Balneario de Panticosa.

Thermal Baths and History

The Balneario de Panticosa is a thermal spa at an altitude of 1,636 metres; its waters were already used by the Romans.

From 1870 onwards, the Balneario de Panticosa became one of the country’s most renowned spas.

The Termas de Tiberio feature a heated outdoor pool with views of the mountains by day and the stars at night. Reservations are mandatory for the thermal circuit at the Termas de Tiberio.

Culture and Local History

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Ntra. Sra. Panticosa was built in the 16th century, around 1560, in the late Gothic style.

Panticosa’s main festival takes place in mid-August in honour of the Assumption of Mary and Saint Roch on 15 and 16 August; the patron-saint celebrations include the traditional customs of Pastorada and Palotiau.

A stone bridge over the Río Caldarés was built in 1556 over an earlier wooden bridge by the master builder Beltrán de Betbedé, who came from Béarn.
