Montmesa: Nature, Birdwatching and Culture

In February and March, up to 40,000 birds stop at the Alberca de Alboré. Along the shores of La Sotonera, numerous waders stop during the migration seasons; in spring, large herons and small reed warblers breed in the dense vegetation at the end of the reservoir. Birds of prey such as harriers and kites can also be observed there.

Nature

The Centro de la Naturaleza Alberca de Alboré offers environmental guided tours in the wetland area as well as scheduled crane-watching sessions. The Ruta ornitológica de La Sotonera is the main trail of this birdwatching route, providing strategic stops for birdwatching and suggesting a drive around the reservoir starting from Montmesa. Trails

The Ruta Verde runs from Montmesa to the Alberca de Alboré and is designated as a 3.7-kilometre hike with a walking time of around 55 minutes. The Ruta Verde is the second stage of the La Sotonera ornithological route and leads towards reed, willow, and tamarisk vegetation.

Cycling is also represented in the Montmesa area by the Marcha Cicloturista BTT Las Grullas „Alberca de Alboré“. The event is being held for the 15th time and combines its cycling route with observation of the crane migration. For the 2026 edition, a 50-kilometre main route and a 14.5-kilometre family route starting in Montmesa were planned. A short hike, a longer main route, and the route designated as the family route provide different time and distance frameworks; these formats can be considered side by side when planning.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel is a listed cultural asset of Aragonese cultural heritage. It has Romanesque origins and was remodelled in the 18th century into a predominantly Baroque building. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Turrullón is a simple masonry structure with corner quoins and a three-bay nave divided by pointed arches.

Montmesa’s main festival in honour of Saint Michael is celebrated on 29 September. The local celebration of the Virgen del Turrullón takes place on the second day of the festivities; on the following day, people ascend to the Virgen.
