Yésero – Pez Tradition and Historic Mountain Architecture

Yésero is one of the eleven municipalities in the province of Huesca included in the Ordesa-Viñamala Biosphere Reserve. In the wider regional surroundings of the biosphere reserve, the landscape is shaped by high-mountain environments with impressive glaciers and glacial erosion features, deciduous mixed forests, stands of black pine, fir forests and alpine pastures.

Culture

The Casa de la Pez is a restored 16th-century building in Yésero and has housed a permanent exhibition on the traditional production of Pez since 2005.

The exhibition explains the extraction of Pez from pine resin, as well as its use for marking livestock, therapeutic purposes and impregnation.

The admission price for visiting the Casa de la Pez also includes the Iglesia de San Saturnino. Yésero has examples of traditional vernacular mountain architecture; some were built using centuries-old dry-stone walling techniques. Among the characteristic buildings are bordas and casetas.

The tower of the Iglesia de San Saturnino preserves the only surviving Mozarabic element in Yésero; this consists of two loophole windows with horseshoe arches. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves was built in the 17th century and is located near the confluence of the Sía and del Infierno ravines.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta de la Pez takes approximately two and a half hours. It begins at the plaza in the village of Yésero; at the roadside shelter at the junction with the N-260, there is an information board and a signpost indicating the start of the route. The trail follows a gently rising or easily walkable path through a pine and beech forest along the Barranco del Infierno.

The Senda Brioleta was announced as an accessible trail approximately three kilometres long in Yésero.

In Yésero, visiting the village and exploring the landscape can be planned as separate focal points. The cultural themes lie in the village setting and the Pez tradition, while the trails offer a different way of experiencing the surroundings. This allows different interests to coexist without requiring them to be combined into a single programme.

Events

The Encuentro de Escritoras Aragonesas Brioleta is an established cultural event promoting, disseminating and connecting Aragonese women authors. The small celebration of San Sebastián is dedicated to 20 January; on the eve, a “chera”, or bonfire, takes place at night in the centre of the Plaza del Fenero.

In Yésero, the events complement the historical and landscape-related themes with a cultural focus of their own. Literary gatherings and local customs thus stand alongside visits to buildings and walks through the landscape, rather than appearing as mere repetitions of the same features of the village.
